Yin Yoga

This class is taught by:

Melissa Christensen

Bio: Lead Teacher Trainer for Spectra School of Yoga - Yoga quickly became a way of life for Melissa when she noticed that the most significant impact of her practice was happening off the mat. With a strong desire to find a deeper meaning and more balanced way of life, she delved into the authentic teachings and philosophy behind the science and practice of yoga. Now an E-RYT500 Yoga Alliance certified teacher, having graduated from Yoga Pura’s 500-hour Advanced Studies & Teacher Training program in Phoenix, AZ, she is devoted to sharing her passion for yoga and the gift this transformational practice offers to all of her students. Her teaching style is balanced between the philosophical and physical offerings of yoga. Whether it’s through flowing vinyasa movement or a slow quiet practice like yin, she takes students on a journey. Using the tools of yoga, married with skillfully selected music and postures, she offers insights and experiments that encourage students to notice unhelpful habits in an effort to find greater joy and peace on and off the mat. Her intention is to challenge both your body and mind - question your perception of reality - leaving you with a profound opportunity for transformation. Fulfilling a deepening intention to teach and share this practice, she is now co-lead teacher for Spectra School of Yoga's Teacher Training program. Melissa is forever thankful to her teachers and friends for guiding and encouraging her as she continues to deepen her own practice and teachings.

Teaching Style: My teaching style is balanced between the philosophical and physical offerings of yoga. Whether it’s through flowing vinyasa movement or a slow quiet practice like yin, both with a mindful focus on breath, I take students on a journey. Using the tools of yoga and sharing personal experiences married with skillfully selected music and postures, I offer insights and experiments that encourage students to notice unhelpful habits in an effort to find greater joy and peace on and off the mat. My intention is to challenge both your body and mind - and question your perception of reality - leaving you with a profound opportunity for transformation.

Ashley McKeachie

Bio: Ashley McKeachie is a certified yoga therapist and registered yoga teacher, who has been committed to teaching the power of yoga since 2011. She received her yoga therapy certification from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in 2014, and three years later, she graduated with her Masters in Yoga Studies from LMU in 2017. She spends most of her time working with chronic pain patients at the Orange County Pain and Wellness Center, and teaches as adjunct faculty at Orange Coast College, where she oversees the yoga program. Along with private yoga therapy sessions, corporate yoga, and leading yoga teacher trainings, Ashley loves to teach
diverse group yoga classes at Spectra Yoga since the opening of the studio in 2015. Recently, she was chosen as one of the featured faculty for Spectra Yoga’s 300-hour advanced yoga teacher training, beginning in September 2018, where Ashley will teach Sanskrit, ancient texts, Tantra,
and Therapeutic yoga.

Ashley began her yoga journey in January 2010, with a background of over twenty years of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. After being diagnosed with thyroid disease in 2006, Ashley went through two sessions of radioactive iodine to reduce the size of her overactive thyroid. The radiation left her feeling lethargic, weak, unmotivated, and desperate for better overall health. Yoga was introduced to Ashley by her favorite Pilates instructor, and she has not looked back
since! Yoga completely changed Ashley's body, mind, and spirit, strengthening her physical, mental, and emotional self. Ashley focuses on positivity, visualization, and themes in her yoga classes. She welcomes all types of students who are interested in the yoga experience; especially those who want to enhance their quality of life.

Teaching Style: Ashley believes that yoga is not in a rush, and her classes are focused on slow, elegant movements that compliment rich, deep inhales, and long, smooth exhales. Expect to move through honey, as Ashley inspires you to connect to your true self, the source of all confidence,
wisdom, and joy.

3 Things I would put in a time capsule:

Lynette Dobos

Bio: Lynette came to yoga after being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at the age of 32. Searching for more natural ways to heal her body from debilitating pain, a friend suggested she try yoga - and
she was instantly hooked. Lynette loved the way the physical practice of yoga could be adapted to suit her individual body’s needs, which, over time, helped her regain mobility and relief from pain. Eager to learn more, she began what is now a 20+ year journey into the study and practice of yoga asana, yoga philosophy, pranayama and meditation. Many classes, workshops, trainings and retreats later, Lynette knew it was her dharma to share the gift of yoga
with others. In 2015 she completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training program with Colleen Hieber, Melissa Christensen and Aileen Pham at Spectra Yoga. She is currently completing her 300-hour advanced yoga teacher training with Courtney Parkyn, Megan Bello, Liz Heffernan and
Alison Scola through Soma Yoga Institute and Better Living Yoga.

Teaching Style: Lynette believes that yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, injuries, or conditions. Recognizing that no two bodies are the same, she takes an adaptive approach to teaching. Whether you are a beginner or advanced practitioner, her students are encouraged to embrace their uniqueness and approach their yoga practice in an authentic way that supports their individual bodies. Lynette’s intention for her students is that they will develop a deeper mind-body connection and experience the many healing benefits of yoga, resulting in an increase in overall wellness and vitality.

Haunani Nakabara

Bio: After I partially tore my Achilles tendons playing volleyball, I had to find a new way to workout that would also help rehabilitate my leg. I started attending yoga classes and fell in love with it. Not only was I getting a great workout, I was given the opportunity to find peace and relaxation. And that’s exactly what I need to balance my Big 4 Accounting job (I’m also a CPA/product manager at KPMG). My favorite practice is Yin Yoga, which lead me to complete Yin Yoga teacher training even though I wasn’t a yoga teacher yet. The course fueled me to want more! With the encouragement and support of my yoga family, I decided to take my practice to the next level by taking the 200 hour teacher training. Now, here I am sharing my love of yoga with you today!

Teaching Style: Do you feel like you’re constantly on overdrive and your mind is always racing? Are you looking for a calm and peaceful place? Many of us live fast pace, demanding, and hectic lives – jobs, kids, traffic. Come to my class for the chance to unplug, take a breath, and center yourself.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: Pictures of friends and family, a note summarizing the past year, and a family tree.

Aundy Weeks

Bio: Aundy began yoga quite some time ago with a home practice. Her practice then ebbed and flowed until 2009 when her life had become unmanageable. She began practicing at a studio and quickly jumped into a 200 hour Dayton Method teacher training with the intention to just further her practice and to immerse more deeply into the yoga life. However, the passion and love she found was boundless and she wanted to share the life changing experience with others. She has been teaching steadily since January of 2010. In spring of 2014 she took another training but this time a 200 hour Warrior Flow certification because she believes the marriage of these two practices results in a well rounded mind body and spirit. Soon after this she discovered Yin yoga which resonated deeply within her and she took the training because she knew what balance this would bring to the mind. Now, this family of styles offers such opportunity to bring yoga to everyone. She teaches with passion and truly from the heart with a playful spirit.

Teaching Style: Genuine, loving and encouraging

3 things I would put in a time capsule: 1) Yoga mat, 2) Picture of family, friends & pets, 3) Gratitude List

Leslie Rothman

Bio: Yoga became a way of life for me when my youngest son was in pre-kindergarten and I had time to dedicate to the practice. After my first yoga class, I was hooked! I love that I was able to have an hour or two out of the day to dedicate to myself and I was able to focus on nothing but what was happening on the mat. I soon became a regular on my yoga mat, practicing any free time I had. I love how yoga challenged me, at the same leaving me with a sense of peace and contentment. My husband and I share our love of yoga and meditation with our children.
I decided to take Spectra School of Yoga's teacher training program in 2016. It was an incredible experience and I loved what I was learning. My hatha/vinyasa yoga style is strongly influenced by the great teachers I have had along the way. I feel very fortunate to have been surrounded by and continue to feel the support in my home, my neighborhood and yoga community. Yoga has enriched my life in insurmountable ways!

Teaching Style: My teaching style is vinyasa flow with attention to cueing and alignment. I am encouraging to my students allowing them to feel comfortable and not intimidated, to challenge themselves.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: 1) My journals. I have some which span over the past 20 years of my life, each recording my daily thoughts, emotions, favorite quotes, experiences, etc. I have a love for words, language and writing. It helps me to sort out my emotions and articulate my thoughts when I put pen to paper.

Level: All levels
Temperature: Room Temperature
Description: Challenging in a different way, Yin Yoga consists of longer held, mostly seated or lying postures that passively stretch connective tissue and muscles in order to unblock held energy and release physical tightness. Accompanied by relaxing music and guided instruction to help still and quiet the mind, yin yoga will help students gain greater flexibility and mobility, as well as a new sense of calm and balance that carries throughout the day. Yin Yoga is a great way to balance the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga. Yin is practiced in a cool room and appropriate for all levels (including prenatal).
