Yin Yoga

This class is taught by:

Ashley McKeachie

Bio: Ashley McKeachie is a registered yoga instructor and yoga therapist, who received her 200-hour teacher training through Core Power Yoga and her 800- hour clinical yoga therapy certification at Loyola Marymount University. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Yoga Studies from Loyola Marymount University, with an expected graduation date of Spring 2017. While attending school, Ashley works as a yoga therapist at the Orange County Pain and Wellness Center in Santa Ana. In this functional restoration program, she teaches patients a variety of tools of yoga to help alleviate the symptoms associated with chronic pain. Ashley is part-time faculty at Orange Coast College, and teaches Hatha Yoga Level 1 and 2 for the Kinesiology department. She also teaches numerous types of group yoga classes at SportsCare Chiropractic in Huntington Beach and Spectra Yoga in Costa Mesa, including Yoga Therapy, Vinyasa, Power, Yin, Restorative, Chair, and Prime Of Life Yoga™. Ashley has been the official yoga therapist for the UC Irvine Men’s Basketball Team since 2013, and wishes them well in their current season.

Ashley began her yoga journey in January 2010, with a background of over twenty years of ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Upon returning to Southern California in 2008 after living in Italy for 10 years, she was diagnosed with thyroid disease. She went through two sessions of radioactive iodine to reduce the size of her overactive thyroid, which left her feeling lethargic, weak, unmotivated, and desperate for better overall health. Yoga completely changed Ashley, making her the strongest she has ever been, and continues to improve the connection between her mind, body, and breath. She brings encouragement, hands-on adjustments, visualization, and the Yoga Sutras to her classes. Ashley believes that Yoga gives you the confidence to know and feel that everything is as it should be, and you are already perfect exactly the way you are.

Teaching Style: Ashley believes that yoga is not in a rush, and her classes are focused on slow, smooth movements that compliment rich, deep inhales and exhales. Expect to move through honey, as Ashley inspires you to connect to your true self, the source of all confidence, wisdom, and joy.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: 1) DVD Copy of Jaws (First scary movie that instilled a massive fear of swimming in the ocean), 2) Margarita Pizza from Florence, Italy (Ashley lived in Italy for 10 years), 3)Diploma from Loyola Marymount University, Masters in Yoga Studies (Hopefully, she will be admitted in Fall 2015)

Angel Montague

Bio: Angel Montague is a certified Yoga instructor, an educator for special needs students and a mother of two vibrant boys. Her classes benefit all levels of students while encompassing postures from the hot series, vinyasa, and a Yin style of yoga. She adds a unique element to her teaching style by uniting Deaf and hearing yogis alike by incorporating American Sign Language into her weekly donation-based beach classes.
Her genuine passion to teach and her fascination of the interconnectedness we all share shines through in her classes as she aims to inspire others to discover and reveal their inner truth. Angel earned both her 200 hour and 100 hour certifications through Core Power Yoga, a Children’s yoga certification through Smiling Monkeys, and a Yin Yoga certification through Ra Yoga. She enjoys being outdoors immersed in the beauty and wonder of nature.

Teaching Style: I bring a grounding, calming energy to our practice. I am often told I have a beautiful teaching voice, which can help encourage you through the more challenging parts of class as well as soothe you right into savasana bliss! There is often an introspective aspect to my classes and my fascination with the interconnectedness of all things shine through as I aim to inspire people to discover and reveal their inner truth. Yoga is my passion! I hope to share the joy it's given me with all of those who will accept it.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: 1) My journals. I have some which span over the past 20 years of my life, each recording my daily thoughts, emotions, favorite quotes, experiences, etc. I have a love for words, language and writing. It helps me to sort out my emotions and articulate my thoughts when I put pen to paper.
2) Pictures of my family and I. It is true that a picture can say 1,000 words. My two boys and the rest of my family are the best gifts I could ever have.
3) Sand and shells from the beach. It's my happy place and where I feel the most connected to a higher source, whether it be practicing yoga, surfing, swimming or just soaking up the sun.

Matt B Benavidez

Bio: Matt was born and raised in Orange County and lives an active lifestyle. He enjoys running, biking, hiking, surfing, skating, and and most team sports. He began taking yoga classes as a way to gain more balance and flexibility, and quickly realized its benefits physically, mentally, and spiritually. Matt quickly fell in love with the philosophy of yoga and tries to incorporate it into his daily life on and off the mat. He is constantly trying to create a place of peace and happiness in the studio and in his life. As an avid musician, he finds a sense of relaxation while playing multiple instruments and listening to an eclectic mix of music. Matt completed his 200 hr teacher training in December 2012 and is constantly learning as much as he can about different styles of yoga to better his students practice as well as his own.

Teaching Style: Very Grounding approach to teaching power vinyasa, hot, and yin/restorative yoga

3 things I would put in a time capsule: iPod with all my favorite music/created music, Light on Yoga, and a Tibetan singing bowl

Haunani Nakabara

Bio: After I partially tore my Achilles tendons playing volleyball, I had to find a new way to workout that would also help rehabilitate my leg. I started attending yoga classes and fell in love with it. Not only was I getting a great workout, I was given the opportunity to find peace and relaxation. And that’s exactly what I need to balance my Big 4 Accounting job (I’m also a CPA/product manager at KPMG). My favorite practice is Yin Yoga, which lead me to complete Yin Yoga teacher training even though I wasn’t a yoga teacher yet. The course fueled me to want more! With the encouragement and support of my yoga family, I decided to take my practice to the next level by taking the 200 hour teacher training. Now, here I am sharing my love of yoga with you today!

Teaching Style: Do you feel like you’re constantly on overdrive and your mind is always racing? Are you looking for a calm and peaceful place? Many of us live fast pace, demanding, and hectic lives – jobs, kids, traffic. Come to my class for the chance to unplug, take a breath, and center yourself.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: Pictures of friends and family, a note summarizing the past year, and a family tree.

Aundy Weeks

Bio: Aundy began yoga quite some time ago with a home practice. Her practice then ebbed and flowed until 2009 when her life had become unmanageable. She began practicing at a studio and quickly jumped into a 200 hour Dayton Method teacher training with the intention to just further her practice and to immerse more deeply into the yoga life. However, the passion and love she found was boundless and she wanted to share the life changing experience with others. She has been teaching steadily since January of 2010. In spring of 2014 she took another training but this time a 200 hour Warrior Flow certification because she believes the marriage of these two practices results in a well rounded mind body and spirit. Soon after this she discovered Yin yoga which resonated deeply within her and she took the training because she knew what balance this would bring to the mind. Now, this family of styles offers such opportunity to bring yoga to everyone. She teaches with passion and truly from the heart with a playful spirit.

Teaching Style: Genuine, loving and encouraging

3 things I would put in a time capsule: 1) Yoga mat, 2) Picture of family, friends & pets, 3) Gratitude List

Melissa Christensen

Bio: Lead Teacher Trainer for Spectra School of Yoga - Yoga quickly became a way of life for Melissa when she noticed that the most significant impact of her practice was happening off the mat. With a strong desire to find a deeper meaning and more balanced way of life, she delved into the authentic teachings and philosophy behind the science and practice of yoga. Now an E-RYT500 Yoga Alliance certified teacher, having graduated from Yoga Pura’s 500-hour Advanced Studies & Teacher Training program in Phoenix, AZ, she is devoted to sharing her passion for yoga and the gift this transformational practice offers to all of her students. Her teaching style is balanced between the philosophical and physical offerings of yoga. Whether it’s through flowing vinyasa movement or a slow quiet practice like yin, she takes students on a journey. Using the tools of yoga, married with skillfully selected music and postures, she offers insights and experiments that encourage students to notice unhelpful habits in an effort to find greater joy and peace on and off the mat. Her intention is to challenge both your body and mind - question your perception of reality - leaving you with a profound opportunity for transformation. Fulfilling a deepening intention to teach and share this practice, she is now co-lead teacher for Spectra School of Yoga's Teacher Training program. Melissa is forever thankful to her teachers and friends for guiding and encouraging her as she continues to deepen her own practice and teachings.

Teaching Style: My teaching style is balanced between the philosophical and physical offerings of yoga. Whether it’s through flowing vinyasa movement or a slow quiet practice like yin, both with a mindful focus on breath, I take students on a journey. Using the tools of yoga and sharing personal experiences married with skillfully selected music and postures, I offer insights and experiments that encourage students to notice unhelpful habits in an effort to find greater joy and peace on and off the mat. My intention is to challenge both your body and mind - and question your perception of reality - leaving you with a profound opportunity for transformation.

Duane Strosaker

Bio: Duane has always been fitness oriented and contemplative. In high school, he ran on the cross country team. Then he joined the U.S Army and became a paratrooper, jumping out of airplanes and running around in the woods at night. With money saved for college, he graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy, and then he worked for 15 years as a licensed private investigator. Since then he has found more humble work. His great passion has been paddling on the ocean, whether it’s whale watching, surfing, racing, or just enjoying quiet time far offshore. When he began practicing yoga over 20 years ago, it was initially just a way for him to cross train for paddling, and slowly, as he began to notice the many benefits of yoga, both physically and mentally, the ancient practice became a major positive influence in his life. He decided to become a yoga teacher to share his enthusiasm for the practice.

Teaching Style: Duane emphasizes free breathing with awareness, functional strength using the entire body, and a healthy range of motion to enable balanced posture, all with the understanding that every human body moves differently. He also teaches with a light heart, believing that practice is a reward in itself.

3 things I would put in a time capsule: A hand written note saying, “Nothing can adequately represent the beauty of life.”
Level: All levels
Temperature: Room Temperature
Description: Challenging in a different way, Yin Yoga consists of longer held, mostly seated or lying postures that passively stretch connective tissue and muscles in order to unblock held energy and release physical tightness. Accompanied by relaxing music and guided instruction to help still and quiet the mind, yin yoga will help students gain greater flexibility and mobility, as well as a new sense of calm and balance that carries throughout the day. Yin Yoga is a great way to balance the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga. Yin is practiced in a cool room and appropriate for all levels (including prenatal).
